Josh Silver BCom

Associate

Josh grew up obsessed with sports. He co-captained the varsity hockey and tennis teams in high school and those leadership skills were put to full use in a key role in running the Queen’s University Sports Industry Conference. At the same time, he obtained his Commerce Degree with Honours at the Smith School of Business, also at Queen’s.

“As soon as I realized I wasn’t going pro,” Josh says with a laugh, “I needed to shift gears. Being on the executive team for the Conference demonstrated that I could bridge the gap between sports and business.” Both the Conference and his studies at Smith showed him it did not have to be one or the other, and finance quickly came to the top of his list of interests.

“I knew I wanted a career where I could combine my communication and networking skills with my analytical and technical qualifications. Private wealth management and Newport fit the bill,” Josh says. The firm’s unique investment philosophy, client-focused approach, team culture, and the opportunity to work directly with Newport’s Chief Investment Officer, and Investment Committee, presented an incredible combination to start a career in finance.

Josh joined Newport as an intern in 2018 and hasn’t looked back. Now, as an investment management Associate, Josh works under Newport’s Investment Committee, where he researches prospective investment opportunities for the firm, provides update reports on all current investments, and assesses opportunity and scalability around Newport’s fund’s holdings for the Investment Committee. Josh’s ambition is to become a Portfolio Manager and is pursuing his Level I CFA credentials.

Outside of work, Josh’s interest in sports and the outdoors continues. He is an avid golfer who also loves to ski, play hockey, tennis, and go on canoe trips. A Toronto native, he still cheers for Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Steelers and has set a personal goal to travel to each continent some day.
