A Season for Giving: TRIP Canada Celebrates 20 Years of Charitable Work in Sri Lanka

The holiday season reminds us of the joy and generosity that define this special time of year. It’s a moment to reflect on the impact of giving and how even the smallest acts of kindness can transform lives. As we celebrate the spirit of the season, we are proud to spotlight an incredible milestone: TRIP Canada’s 20th year building hope and homes in Sri Lanka.

In the wake of the devastating 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia, TRIP Canada and its founders, Janet and Bruce McKelvey, stepped in to provide critical aid for Sri Lankan communities, focusing on rebuilding homes for displaced families.

Two decades later, their efforts remain as vital as ever. Economic challenges and the unique struggles of many Sri Lankan families have intensified the need for safe, secure housing. In 2025, Janet reports that they have 20+ volunteers signed up to go to Sri Lanka in April. TRIP Canada also has plans to commemorate the milestone anniversary with 20 new projects: “10 new scholarships for students, five new family homes, and five new community projects based on education, literacy, and play,” Janet says.

Stories of resilience
Each family supported by TRIP Canada has a compelling story. From Iroshan and Shalini, who struggle to complete their home while caring for a young daughter with congenital heart disease, to Nadeesha, a single mother raising her disabled daughter with the help of her extended family—these stories underscore the pressing need for stable housing.

Then there’s Wasantha, a widow working tirelessly to support her sons and mother, and Chaminda and Geethika, a hardworking couple striving to provide a better future for their three children. Thanks to TRIP Canada’s efforts and the support of their contributors and volunteers, these families can move into homes where they’ll no longer face leaking roofs or overcrowded spaces.

Building hope, together
Newport has been a steadfast supporter of TRIP Canada since the beginning, most recently sponsoring the organization’s 65th home-build project. This holiday season, Newport is proud to sponsor another home build, helping to ensure that TRIP Canada’s transformative work continues well into the future.

The collective impact of communities and organizations working together is inspiring. As construction begins on these new homes in April 2025, we’re reminded that every brick laid is a testament to hope, resilience, and the power of generosity.

A legacy of giving
The holidays are a perfect time to embrace the spirit of generosity, helping to create brighter futures for those in need. Whether through financial contributions, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, every action makes a difference.

Here’s wishing you and your loved ones joy in this season of giving.
