01/23/2025
An occasional blog series that introduces you to our Newport Private Wealth team members
Our Meet the Team series takes a closer look at the people behind Newport Private Wealth. In this instalment, we talk to Angelica Magsisi, Designer and Marketing Coordinator based in our Toronto office.
With a background in fine arts and design—earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from York University in Toronto and a certificate in digital publishing from George Brown College—Angelica’s career journey has been anything but conventional. She began at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), contributing to the publishing department, and later led a major financial services account at a marketing agency. In 2017, she joined Newport Private Wealth in a newly created role, blending her creative expertise with a passion for meaningful work.
We sat down with Angelica to discuss the intersection of marketing and finance and how she channels her creative energy into communication materials that strive to make wealth management easier to understand.
You started in design and publishing. How did you find your way to finance?
I began studying fine arts at York University, and toward the end of my degree, I discovered a love for layout and design. I immersed myself in that world and decided to build on my skills by studying digital publishing at George Brown College. That led to a contract at the ROM, where I worked in the publishing department on an architectural book where I contributed as an illustrator, site supervisor, and coordinator. I even received credit in the book!
What I loved most about that experience was the detailed, meticulous work and the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented people. It allowed me to use both my creative and analytical sides.
From there, I joined a marketing agency as the lead designer for a financial client. That’s when I realized how much I enjoyed the structure and challenges of the finance world. When it was time to make a move, I knew I wanted to stay in finance, which led me to Newport. The role was new and undefined at the time, which gave me the chance to shape it into something impactful.
What was it about Newport and finance in general that you liked so much?
Finance is one of those important life skills. It’s an area of expertise that can actually make a difference in people’s lives, but it also combines all the things I love about marketing and creativity. Finance and wealth management often contain concepts that aren’t easy to articulate or understand. Being able to work first-hand with portfolio managers and other client-facing team members to help bring our messages to life is really satisfying. It’s not just about what we’re trying to say, but what do people need to hear, and how do they need to hear it?
What does a typical day look like for you?
It’s almost always different. During quarter end, it’s intense. Client reporting, statements, updating all the collateral that is client- and prospect-facing, including the website, presentations, brochures, white papers: there’s so much to go through and accuracy is critical.
Day-to-day, we work closely with portfolio managers to develop customized presentations for prospects, create materials for our referral network, or invitations for events. It’s a collaborative effort where we play a key role in shaping messaging, storytelling, and the overall experience. There’s always something new and exciting to tackle.
One thing for sure—I’m never bored!
What do you consider to be your biggest challenge?
Client concerns, goals and objectives can be very personal, so it’s not just creating and designing material that all fit under the brand umbrella; it’s about making sure that specific clients, with specific needs, are getting what they need, how and when they need it. Financial concepts can be complex, so the challenge lies in translating them into clear, engaging content—whether through writing or visuals—that resonates with different audiences. It’s not always easy, but it’s a rewarding and creative challenge.
What’s your favourite part of what you do?
I love creating new visuals. New designs. New ways of communicating what we do. More often than not, I’m in coordinator mode supporting our team across the various offices, but when I have a chance to sit down and talk with our team of experts…collaborating with them and hearing first-hand stories about clients and their needs, all in an effort to refresh our messaging and come up with something completely new, it’s great. That, and I like that the marketing team has a hand in almost everything we do. Nothing goes out unless it goes through the Newport Communications Committee.
What do you do outside of work? What keeps you inspired?
I know a lot of people say this, but it’s true. I love family. My partner and I recently moved back east to Durham, where I grew up. And we adopted two cats, Mochi and Sam. Beyond that, I enjoy visiting galleries, museums, and photography as a hobby. I also really enjoy movies and I’m a huge MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) fan. That, and I love to travel. I’ve been to over 25 cities and 14 countries so far, and I want to add more to that list. Japan is next, and I hope to go next year.
