David T. Lloyd CPA, CA
Co-Founder & Chief Wealth Management Officer
Given the risks of starting a new business, entrepreneurship may seem an unlikely path for a risk-managing accountant, but David Lloyd has successfully built two businesses over the past three decades.
A Chartered Accountant since 1983, David Lloyd left a well-established financial planning practice to co-found Merchant Private Trust in 1991. At the time, Merchant was the first of its kind in Canada to combine investment management with financial planning in a European style of private banking. Over the next eight years the firm grew, attracting the attention of a Canadian bank which bought it in 1999.
In 2001, David collaborated with his former bank colleagues, Mark Kinney and Douglas Brown, to start Newport Private Wealth. “We believe in a holistic approach to managing a client’s entire balance sheet and we have seen first-hand the successful results of an effective plan over three decades of serving clients.”
David invests his own family’s capital alongside the firm’s clients – a key principle when Newport was started and one that remains so today.
David is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation and has appeared in the media discussing insights into managing wealth and financial issues.
For leisure, David struggles to maintain a single handicap in golf and enjoys time with his wife, children and grandchildren at the family cottage.
