J. David Cole CFA®
Managing Director & Portfolio Manager
Still a teenager when he bought his first stock, David Cole has been an avid student of finance ever since. At university, he and a friend started a business that manufactured apparel commemorating the 25th anniversary of Woodstock. At its peak, the company was shipping 5,000 pieces a week to national retailers.
This entrepreneurial mindset and a near encyclopedic knowledge of capital markets characterize David’s role as Vice Chair of Newport’s Investment Committee and Portfolio Manager. He is relentless and resourceful in identifying hidden investment opportunities, as well as wealth management strategies for his clients.
A Wilfred Laurier University economics graduate and Chartered Financial Analyst, David got his start in 1992 at McGee Capital Management (acquired by Newport Private Wealth in 2003) where he became a portfolio manager and principal, helping to grow that firm from $25 million to $400 million of assets under management. There, he built a large following of loyal clients and also developed expertise in alternative assets, most notably commodities and real estate.
As David explains, “the real estate sector is as big as the stock market, has stable assets, produces attractive returns long-term and doesn’t go up and down with the stock market. It offers great diversification of income, growth and inflation protection.”
Away from the office, David enjoys skiing with his extended family, mountain biking and exploring off the beaten paths of the world.
