Katia Ivanova CFA®
Portfolio Manager
Born and raised in Sofia, Bulgaria, Katia moved to Canada, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, to pursue her university education and a life of better opportunities.
She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree (with specialization in Finance) at the Schulich School of Business at York University, where she graduated top of her class and won several academic scholarships. She obtained her CFA designation shortly thereafter.
Katia spent the first few years of her career as an Equities Research Analyst at RBC Capital Markets. Her strong analytical skills and passion for investing propelled her into the next stage of her career as a Senior Analyst in the Global Equities division of a leading asset management firm Sceptre Investment Council, which was acquired by Fiera Capital in 2010. During the following few years she advanced to a Senior Portfolio Manager role, most recently at Foresters Asset Management, where she was responsible for managing large institutional and retail mutual fund portfolios.
Over the course of her career, Katia discovered she preferred the personal approach of working with individual clients and their families, which led her to joining Newport in early 2020.
“Having navigated through several market shocks over the past 20 years, including the dot com bubble, 9/11 and the Great Financial Crisis of 2008, I’m convinced of the importance of building pro-actively managed, highly-disciplined and truly diversified portfolios. Newport’s approach of utilizing the practices of successful institutional investors for the benefit of individuals aligns with my conviction.”
In her spare time, Katia enjoys yoga, good food, travelling to new destinations, scuba diving, and being a hockey mom.
